Project history: To patrol fishing grounds and oilfields in the new 200-mile EEZ, the RN ordered five modified trawler-type vessels in February 1975. They were based on the Scottish Department of Fisheries' Westra and Jura, giving time for studies for a more capable design. Although much criticised for their low speed and weak armament they proved so successful that two more were ordered in October 1977, equipped with stabilisers but otherwise identical. The philosophy was quite simple: sea-keeping and endurance were the most important attributes, and weaponry was almost irrelevant. They were fitted to replenish at sea from naval oilers and had a sophisticated computer-aided navigation system (CANE).

Modernizations: early 1990s, Orkney, Anglesey, Alderney: + 1 x 1 - 20/90 GAM-B01

mid-1990s, all: - 1 x 1 - 40/60; + 1 x 1 - 30/75 DES-30B

Naval service: No significant events.
