Project history: In 1888 White began building as a private venture, with an eye to Admiralty purchase, a larger version of their 'turnabout' boat equipped with the cut-up stern, a ram bow with a spur ram, and referred to her as a 'torpedo boat destroyer'. In 1885 the Admiralty was glad to buy this formidable vessel just before she ran her first trials. She was purchased and named TB81 in 1888.
Modernizations: 1905: was reboilered with 2 water-tube boilers
1916: + 2 DCR
Naval service: After war service as a patrol craft she was broken up in 1921.
