Project history: Built for Chile, they had reached that country in a disassembled slate when the Russian war scare of 1885 caused them to be hastily purchased to reinforce the Pacific Squadron based at Esquimault in British Columbia. They were assembled in Chile and escorted up to Canada. Here they remained as tenders to the flagship Swiftsure, and inevitably were unofficially christened Swift and Sure.
Modernizations: early 1900s, both: - 2 x 2 - 25/40, 1 x 1 - 356TT; + 2 x 5 - 11.4/70, 2 - 356 TC
Naval service: No significant events.
