Project history: These were rather odd-looking ships, with their two funnels very far apart, and, unlike their predecessors, they had a raised poop as well as a raised forecastle. However they were only slightly larger and more powerfully armed versions of the Alarms, sharing their predecessors' weaknesses. They were building at the same time as the first destroyers, and were immediately put into the shade by these smaller but faster vessels.
Modernizations: 1914, Dryad, Halcyon, Hussar: were converted to minesweepers; - 2 x 1 - 450 TT; + kite winch and gallows on quarterdeck.
1915, Hussar: - 1 x 1 - 120/40, 3 x 1 - 57/40; + 2 x 1 - 76/40 12pdr 12cwt QF Mk I
Naval service: In 1914 all except Halcyon and Hazard were converted to minesweepers, the former vessels becoming, respectively, minesweeper and submarine depot ships. Hazard was lost in a collision with s/s Western Australia 28.1.1918. Dryad served as tender to Navigation School in 1906-1914. In 1918 Dryad was briefly relegated to harbour duty as Hamadryad. Halcyon was RNVR drillship to 1908, then in Fishery Protection Service in 1909 - 1914. Harrier served as tender to Navigation School in 1906-1914. Hussar was the Senior Officer`s ship of the Mediterranean Minesweeping Force in 1915-1918.
