Project history: The Italian Ansaldo shipyard was building a destroyer for the Portuguese Navy, to be called Liz, and for reasons which remain obscure she was bought by the Admiralty in March 1915 while fitting out at Genoa. As HMS Arno she was the only foreign-built warship to be purchased for the RN, and she served on escort duties in the Mediterranean after completion in June 1915. She was generally similar to some of the 'River' class in appearance, with two tall
