Project history: In December 1916 orders were placed for 23 repeat 'V' class, but with the triple TT which had not been ready in time for the 'V's. They were virtually identical, the J S White boats having the same level topped and ribbed funnels as the Vectis and Vortigern, and the Thornycrofi 'specials' having the same high freeboard and flat-sided after funnel as the Viceroy and Viscount. Two ordered from Yarrow, to be named Wayfarer and Woodpecker, were cancelled in April 1917 and replaced by 'S' class. In 1918 five ships were completed as minelayers.
By the end of 1930 "V" and "W" classes become outdated, they partly were sold for BU and the majority of the remained was in a reserve. In 1938 it was offered to convert them to fast AA escorts. It allowed to supplement fleet with so necessary ships before 1940 when completion of the first special "Hunt" class ships was expected. In total under the program which was named "WAIR", it was supposed to convert 20 "V" and "W" classes destroyers.
During their conversion all old armaments were replaced by 2 twin 102mm DP guns (fore and aft) and 2 õ 4 12.7mm MGs. Fwd superstructure became box-shaped and bigger. Works on the hull were limited to the insignificant re-planning of internal compartments called in basic changes in a construction of magazines, some (nearby by 2m) lengthening of a forecastle and removing of side oil fuel tanks over wl.
