Project history: She was designed as improved Scott, however ship with 2450t full displacement had been recognised by excessively big and expensive, that has served as a cause of a failure from her further working out. Variant with much more modest data has been approved to building: hull length was decreased by 13.1m, displacement was moderated, power and structure of machinery also (boilers number fall from 4 to 3). The number of main guns was not changed, only semi-automatic Mk IX guns instead of Mk l (as on "Modified W", Scott and Shakespeare classes leaders and experimental destroyers of 1924 Programme) were provided. In remaining the structure of armament of the leader corresponded "A" class destroyers. The worser, in comparison with destroyers of her flotilla, manoeuvrability became a significant lack of Codrington. Tactical diameter on full speed of leader exceeded similar indicator on other destroyers by 350m.

Modernizations: 5.1940: - 1 x 4 - 533 TT; + 1 x 1 - 76/45 QF Mk I/II/III/IV

Naval service: Codrington was badly damaged by explosion of air bomb from German Ju 88 bomber at Dover 27.7.1940, ran aground and never repaired.
