Project history: 9-gun wooden-hulled sloops, ordered as gunvessels, 1852 design. Built in response to Admiralty requirement for a 'type of screw vessel below the Cruizer', they were ordered as 1st class gunvessels but reclassified as sloops in 1854. Icarus, Cordelia and Gannet were later built as Racer class.
