Project history: Wooden-hulled 21-gun open battery corvettes. Surveyor's Department design, approved in 1858. Referred to as 'troop frigates', all were ship-rigged, with telescoping funnels. Galatea was also ordered to this design but was reordered in 1856 as wooden screw frigate.

Modernizations: 1864, all: - 1 x 1 - 183/14

1876, Wolverene: was re-engined with 1 2-cyl HSE (2568t, 1493ihp, 11.3kts)

Naval service: No significant events.
