Project history: 51-gun frigates. Surveyor's Department design, approved in 1850. Imperieuse originally ordered in 1848 as 60-gun sailing frigate, was reordered in 1850 as a screw ship. Euryalus originally was ordered in 1848 as 50-gun sailing frigate and was reordered as screw ship in 1851. Intended sisters Bacchante, Liffey, Shannon and Topaze were later completed to a modified design, as were later ordered Mersey and Tweed. Wooden hull.
