Project history: Laid down as a wooden screw sloop and redesigned as an ironclad before much progress had been made on her construction. The conversion was of the same general type as that applied to Research, but with a narrower waterline belt and the guns mounted at upper instead of main deck level. Much effort was directed towards weight saving, and the upper part of the hull was constructed of iron, making her the first vessel of composite construction. The bulwarks fore and aft of the box battery could be hinged back when the guns were in position for end on fire. She had a barque rig with 1700m² sail area, best speed under sail was 9.7kts.
Ship protection: There was full length waterline belt 3.0m deep with a central armoured box battery 10.4m long extending from the belt to the top of the bulwarks.
Modernizations: 1864: the funnel was moved from the centre of the battery to forward of it
1868: was rearmed with 4 x 1 - 178/16 MLR Mk III
Naval service: No significant events.
