Project history: Prototype screw frigate conversion, White design of 1844. Originally ordered in 1828 as sailing 5th rate frigate Ambuscade (renamed in 1831) and begun in 1840 but reordered in 1844 as Steam Vessel (SV1), in 1845 rerated as 1st class frigate.

Modernizations: 1848: reduced to 30-gun

1856: reverted to 36-gun

Naval service: No significant events.
