Project history: In the third group of
'scouts' (the first two were ordered under the 1910 Programme and Fearless
under 1911 Programme) there was little change from the previous class, except to
thicken the shell plating amidships as partial protection against light gunfire,
but even this modest improvement was insufficient to fit them for work with the
Fleet. They could easily be distinguished from the earlier ships by their
'plough' bow.
Ship protection: Main deck had 25mm flat part and 25mm slopes and covered
machinery only.

Naval service: Amphion 6.8.1914 ran into a minefield laid by German auxiliary minelayer Königin Luise and sunk.
