Project history: Zealous was laid down as a 90-gun two-decker and approved for conversion to ironclad in 1861. The conversion was held up pending results with Royal Oak and Prince Consort class. She was not lengthened because it was discovered that earlier ships were lacking in longitudinal strength. 16 guns were installed in the battery, remained four were distributed at the fore and aft ends of the upper deck. She was ship-rigged, with 2700m² sail area and can make 10kts under sail. She was handy under both sail and steam and was s good seaboat.

Ship protection: Full length waterline belt 114mm amidships and 63mm at the ends extended from the main deck to 1.8m below waterline. The central battery between the main and upper decks was 31m long.

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: No significant events.

Zealous with funnel lowered.
