Project history: Conversion of 80-gun 2nd rate, suspended incomplete on stocks, to 70-gun screw ship. Design was approved in 1849. Ship was lengthened during conversion by 2.1m at the stern, Initially was fitted with engine intended for screw frigate Horatio, the excess weight necessitated reduction of guns number from 80 to 70. Wooden hull.
Modernizations: 1855: re-engined with 1 2-cyl HSE (1471ihp, 9.3kts)
1866: reduced to 66-gun
