Project history: Laid down as 90-gun 2nd rate, conversion to ironclad was approved in 1861. She was lengthened on the stocks priorto decision to hold up her conversion pending the results obtained from Royal Oak and Prince Consort class. Finally it was decided to adopt a box battery and heavy guns and armour as provided for Bellerophon. 229mm guns were mounted in the battery and two 178mm guns were mounted at each end of the main deck behind armour and unprotected on the upper deck. Ship was ship-rigged, with 2700m² sail area. She was equally as fast under sail or steam and handled well, being a good seaboat apart from a heavy roll.
Ship protection: Full length belt was 152mm amidships and 102mm at the ends and extended from the main deck to 1.7m below the waterline. Between the main and upper deck 152mm armour was provided over the 35m length of the central battery with 114mm at the extreme bow and stern to protect the main deck chase guns.
Modernizations: None.
Naval service: No significant events.
