Project history: Laid down as 91-gun 2nd rates, these ships were approved to be converted to ironclad frigates in 1861. Half-sisters to Royal Oak and had similar conversion except for the provision of increased machinery power to secure greater speed. They were unsuccessful because the extra weight of the machinery cancelled the advantages of the extra power. Ships were barque-rigged on completion and were converted to ship rig in 1866. All made 10-12kts under sails only. They rolled excessively because of the high level of stability but handled well under sail and steam.
Ship protection: Side armour was extended to the full length of the ship, being 114mm amidships and 76mm at the ends. The hull behind the armour was of 749mm thick oak.
Modernizations: 1867, all: rearmed with 4 x 1 - 203/15 MLR Mk III, 20 x 1 - 178/16 MLR Mk III
Naval service: No significant events.
