Project history: Classical 120-gun sailing British ship-of-the-line, converted to steam power on the stocks as 116-gun 1st rates. Originally she was begun as Queen class 110-gun sailing ship. Poor seakeeping qualities of Windsor Castle became apparent during trials, and she had no sea service. It also became a reason to convert her sister-ship Royal Frederick as two-deck steamer. Windsor Castle was rated initially as 120-gun, later 116-gun but was completed with 102 guns. Wooden hull.
Modernizations: 1862: - 2 x 1 - 206/15, 14 x 1 - 161/15; + 1 x 1 - 183/17 110pdr 82cwt BL, 4 x 1 - 160/15 70pdr 42cwt BL, 6 x 1 - 121/21 40pdr 35cwt BL
