Project history: Officially styled ALSL (alternative landing ship logistic) until 2002, when they were retyped "landing platform dock (auxiliary)". The design is based on that of Royal Schelde's Rotterdam-class LPD. Two new "landing ships logistic" (i.e., LST) were to be procured as a result of the 1998 Defence White Paper decisions to replace Sir Geraint and Sir Percivale, but the program was expanded to four ships in 2000, for a planned total cost of £300 million. All are operated by the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. Portions of the hull structure were subcontracted to a Dutch yard.
Have 1,200 lane-meters of vehicle accommodation internally and on the flight deck, and are able to transport 200t of combat cargo such as fuel, ammunition and stores. Two Mexiflote-powered pontoons are stowable on the hull sides. A large helicopter/vehicle/container deck is fitted but no helicopter hangar; have one large or two small helicopter landing spots, capable of landing Chinook helicopter or V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor, there is 18t elevator. The ships are not capable of beaching. A stern docking well (31x9m) can hold one LCU Mk 10, though no landing craft are carried in davits. Employ azimuthal propellers and have no rudders. Two 30t vehicle and cargo-handling cranes are fitted amidships. Each ship can be armed with 2 Phalanx CIWS, 2 30mm DS-30B guns and 2 decoy RLs.
