Project history: Medium submarine, built as private initiative by Spanish businessman Horatio Echivarrieta on own
shipyard in Cadiz. Boat should become a production prototype for offered by Echivarrieta serial building for Spanish Navy. Project Pu111 was created by Ingeenieurkantoor voor Scheepsbouw (IvS) on a basis
of German perspective submarine of UG
type developed in 1918, but never realised because of Armistice. Building was conducted at active participation of
Germans, and as basic subcontractor at building Wilton-Fijenoord acted. E1 gone out
to trials in May, 1931 with German crew under command of A. de la Perrier. However Spanish
Government refused her acquisition and building of this class, preferred to begin building of
D type submarines of national designed. As result
Echivarrieta since 1932 tried to sell E1 abroad. Among possible buyers the USSR was considered also, but as result in 1934
submarine was bought by Turkey for 9 million pesetas and named Gur.
She was accepted by Turkish crew in Spain 27.12.1934 and arrived Istanbul in January, 1935.
Saddle-tank hull, main ballast and fuel tanks were
placed in a pressure hull. She was equipped
by German armament and MAN diesels, and gun was installed on fin structure was atypical for
German designs. Gur served as prototype for IA series
submarines built in Germany and IX series submarines built in the USSR.
Modernizations: mid-1940s: + 1 x 1 - 20/70 Oerlikon Mk IV.
Naval service: No significant events.
