Project history: Built in the USA under the same program, as Hamidiye to which was close on construction and had similar armament (these ships quite often even called as sister-ships, that is an error), ordered in 1900. Originally ship was named Abdul Mecid, renamed Mecidiye before commission. She was equipped with whimsical and unreliable Niclausse boilers. On trials she reached 22kts at 13396hp, but in 1914 could make no more than 18kts.
Ship protection: Protective deck had 38mm flat part and 102mm slopes.
Modernizations: 1918: armament consisted of 10 x 1 - 130/53 (ru)
(1925-6/1927, Gölcük Tersane): boilers were replaced by 16 Babcock & Wilcox; armament consisted of 4 x 1 - 130/53, 4 x 1 - 76/50 Schneider, 2 - 450 TT (beam, 6); real speed was 20kts.
Naval service: 3.4.1915 Mecidiye was sunk on shallow water at Odessa on Russian mine. 8.6.1915
she was salvaged, later repaired, rearmed (10 130mm/55, 4 75mm/50
guns) and 29.10.1915 entered Russian Imperial Navy as Prut. She was
commissioned in February, 1916, but in view of bad boilers condition practically was never used in operations. 1.5.1918
she was captured at Sevastopol by German troops and 12.5.1918 returned to Turkey under former
name. After returning from Russia Mecidiye was used as training hulk
armed with 2 152mm/45 and 2 120mm/45 guns, but in 1919 laid up at Istanbul in the semi-disarmed condition.
Mecidiye was again commissioned in June, 1927 after repair
at Gölcük. Real speed did not exceed 20kts. Since 1940 she was used as
training hulk at Gölcük; she was stricken 1.3.1947, but taken apart on metal only in 1952-1956.
