Project history: Small, iron-hulled casemate ironclads with a ram bow, one funnel and two masts, and rigged as brigantines. There was a partial double bottom. The 4 229mm 12.5t Armstrong ML guns were in casemates on the main deck amidships. The sides were cut away so that each gun could fire both ahead and astern on restricted arcs. Both were reconstructed by Ansaldo between 1903 and 1906, when the ends were cut down and they were rearmed. They were reboilered with cyl boilers but retained their existing engines and armour. They received a CT and were fitted with a military mast amidships.

Ship protection: The complete wl belt was 152mm thick above lwl and 127mm thick below. It extended 1.1m below and 0.9m above lwl.

Modernizations: 1882, both: + 2 x 1 - 87/22 RK L/24 C/82

(1903-1906, Ansaldo, Genoa, Italy), both: re-boilered with 2 cylindrical water-tube boilers, CT had 152mm sides; new armament consisted of 4 x 1 - 149/37 SK L/40 C/06, 6 x 1 - 75/37 SK L/40, 10 x 1 - 57/37 SK L/40 C/99, 2 x 1 - 47/37 SK L/40 C/99

1910, Avnillah: was armed with 4 x 1 - 57/37 SK L/40 C/99

1910, Muin-i Zafer: was armed with 2 x 1 - 75/37 SK L/40, 4 x 1 - 57/37 SK L/40 C/99

Naval service: Avnillah was hulked in 1910 and sunk 24.2.1912 by gunfire of Italian cruiser Garibaldi at Beirut. Muin-i Zafer become torpedo training hulk in 1913, barrack vessel in 1920 and submarine depot ship in 1928. She was stricken in 1932 and BU in 1934.
