Project history: Formerly USN Tench class submarines. Both converted to GUPPY II configuration in 1948 with increased battery capacity, a streamlined fin and bow and improved sonar. The US intended that they should only be capable of being used for ASW training, so the TT were sealed up before they were transferred. They were returned to operational status, however, with modern Italian torpedoes supplied in 1976. They were scheduled for replacement by Dutch built boats, but the problems with that programme has meant that they have remained in service, despite being obsolete.
Modernizations: None.
Naval service: No significant events.
