Project history: First Swedish submarines of completely national design (at creation of several previous classes technical help of German Weser design bureau was used). At the same time in design of Sjölejonet class two constructive decisions were available which occurrence is possible to explain only by foreign influence. Former was stern trained power-driven twin TT: such devices were widely applied in the French navy in 1930th; latter were 40mm AA MGs on disappeared mountings for decrease of resistance in special tight trunks. This construction almost repeated applied on Dutch submarines of О12 class.

Modernizations: 1950s, all: - 2 x 1 - 40/40, 1 x 2 - 533 TT; CT was streamlined; + radar, sonar

Naval service: Svärdfisken 18.1.1942 was badly damaged at collision with battleship Sverige and returned to service after repair only in 1949. Sjöborren was sunk as a result of collision 4.9.1942 but soon been salvaged and commissioned again after repair.
