Project history: Type A 19 attack submarines. Design is updated version of Västergötland class with air-independent propulsion system and improved electronics. Originally ordered 28 March 1990, but specification changed 5 September 1991 to incorporate Stirling air-independent propulsion system, resulting in a 200t increase in displacement and overall length increasing by 7.5m. As for previous boats, Kockums building the mid-section of the hulls and Karlskronavarvet building the bows and sterns.

Modernizations: 10.2011, Halland; 2012, Uppland; 2014, Gotland: - SESUB 940A CCS; + Subac sonar, SESUB 960B CCS

2018, Gotland; 2019, Uppland: 2m hull section was added (length oa became 62.4m), new optronic mast, AIP system was modernized; - Terma Scanter radar; + new radar

Naval service: No significant events.
