Project history: In 2003 the Spanish government formally authorized the construction of all four submarines of S80 class. These are the first Spanish boats to be fitted with air-independent propulsion (AIP) and each boat will carry a 300 kw UTC Polymer Electrolytic Membrane (also called Proton Exchange Membrane) fuel cell using reformed ethanol and pure oxygen to meet the requirement for 15 days of submerged AIP operations at 4 kts. Design includes space for 8 commandos and a small lockout chamber for special forces and missions. Expected to be fitted with a Socilsub sonar suite that is based on the French DSUV-22 system and would include a cylindrical bow transducer array, an active array, a passive ranging array, an acoustic intercept system, and passive flank arrays. Two additional units may be ordered in the future for a planned total of six units.
