Project history: Ships were built under the law from 17.2.1915 as increased variant of Recalde. In 1920s names José Canaleas and Eduardo Dato have been shrunk, though official commands on it did not go out.

Modernizations: (8/1936-2/1937), Dato; (2-9/1937), Cánovas del Castillo; (8/1937-1/1938), Dato: stem was reconstructed as straight, superstructure was rebuilt, all guns were installed on centre line and received shields; - 2 x 1 - 47/50; + 2 x 1 - 76/40 Ansaldo 1917, 1 x 1 - 20/70 Scotti-Isotta Fraschini 1939.

1940s, all: - 2 x 1 - 76/40, 1 x 1 - 20/70; + 2 x 1 - 47/50 Vickers, 3 x 1 - 20/65 C/38.

Naval service: At beginning of Civil war Cánovas del Castillo, Eduardo Dato and José Canalejas were transferred under control of Nationalists. Eduardo Dato at Algeciras 7.8.1936 was sunk by gunfire of republican battleship Jaime I. She was salvaged in the same month and passed repair in Cadiz with full modernization till February, 1937. Two sister-ships were modernized later similarly. In 1958 last survived ship was re-classified as frigate.
