Project history: Strongly armed purpose-built gunboats-minelayers, built under the law from 27.3.1934. First Spanish combat ships constructed using welding, with machinery using high parameters steam (25atm, 310°C). Mines were carried on closed mine deck, loaded through 4 sideports and laid from rails through 4 stern ports. For the financial reasons building of ships was delayed, and by July, 1936 they all were outfitted by builder in El Ferrol where they passed to Nationalists. Júpiter class minelayers appeared successful and very valuable multipurpose ships actively used by Nationalists. In 1958-1961 Júpiter and Vulcano were converted to ASW frigates with modern American armament and electronics. All were rated as frigates in 1961.
