Project history: First three ordered 29 June 1977, but construction was deferred to give priority to the new carrier. Reina Sofía, approved in 1985, was ordered 19 June 1986, and the last pair on 26 December 1989. Long-hulled FFG7 type, with extra beam to allow more top-weight. Escorts for Principe de Asturias. Although twin hangars can accommodate two SH-60B, only one per ship is carried.

Modernizations: 2007, Victoria; 2008, Numancia; 2009, Santa María; 2010, Reina Sofía: - RAN-12L/X radar; + RAN-30L/X radar
