Project history: Previously called the BPC-47 (BAM)-project. BAM = Buque de Action Maritime (Maritime Action Ship). This class of 2900t patrol ships are as large as frigates, though less heavily armed and built to a modular design permitting a wide array of missions including fisheries and coastal patrol, counterpiracy, search-and-rescue, humanitarian assistance, hydrographic research, intelligence collection, diving support, and salvage operations. Intended to replace the Barcelo and Anaga classes. All craft carry two RIBs and are fitted with 24.7x13.5m helicopter landing platform for 1 NH90 sized aircraft, and a hangar. First 4 ships were ordered in July 2005, two in May 2014.
