Project history: Developed by Blohm & Voss from the Portuguese Joao Coutinho design, and subsequently modified by Bazán. Four ships were ordered in December 1973, and four more in May 1976. Several frigates of an improved Descubierta design prepared in the early 1980s (1879t full load, 100m oa, weapons as Descubierta plus helicopter and hangar, gas turbine propulsion, 30+ kts) were proposed, but orders placed were for the much larger FFG7 type.

Modernizations: late 1980s, all: - Beta ECM suite; + Furuno radar, Deneb Mk 1600, Canopus Mk 1600 ECM suites, 2x Mk 36 SRBOC decoy RL, SLQ-25 Nixie torpedo decoy, Tritan IV CCS
