Project history: Were to have been constructed under a 1994 cooperative venture with Germany and the Netherlands. Spain, however, withdrew from the radar and weapons control portions of the agreement in 1995. Authority to construct four was granted by the Council of Ministers in 1997, the contract was placed 31.1.1997, and fabrication of modules began during November 1997. The Standard SAM system provides AAW coverage out to 150+ km. The fifth unit of the class was ordered during June 2005. Have fin stabilizers. A design growth margin of 450t was provided, and maximum permissible displacement is 6250t. 15x5.8x5.6m hangar can accommodate two SH-60-sized helicopters, but only one is assigned to each ship; the flight deck measures 27x17m. Fireproof internal paneling is employed, and special efforts have been made to reduce radar, acoustic, and heat signatures. Lockheed Martin Distributed Advanced Naval Combat System is much the same Aegis Baseline 5 Phase in system used on current-construction U.S. Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, but the Spanish version has a federated data-distribution architecture, giving it some features of the later Aegis Baseline 6 Phase I on the first two ships and Baseline 7 Phase I on the latter two.

Planned F106 Roger de Lauria was authorised in March 2007 with construction start in 2009 but suspended and finally cancelled in 2012.

Modernizations: 2009-2010, all completed: - Standard SM-2MR Block IIIA SAM; + Standard SM-2MR Block IIIB SAM

Naval service: No significant events.
