Project history: Launched as units two and three of the Oquendo class (above) bul completed at Cartagena to an enlarged and modernized design; they were relaunched after hulks were lengthened and widened. Full US weapon and electronic fit, and generally to USN Gearing class FRAM II standards.

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: Marqués de la Ensenada was repaired after terrorist bomb attack on 2 October 1981, parts being taken from Roger de Lauria. Speed was reduced by recurrent boiler problems.
