Project history: Nine units of this class, based on the pre-war French Le Hardi class, were ordered in 1947-1948, but six, Blas de Lezo, Blasco de Garay, Bonifaz, Gelmirez, Langara and Recalde, were cancelled in 1953. The 8 105mm guns (4x2), 7 533mm torpedo tubes (1x3+2x2) and 2 DC throwers originally planned were replaced by the 120mm guns and ASW weapons. Trials of Oquendo showed a dangerous lack of stability, so she was taken in hand for ballasting and reduction of top weight. This work was completed on 22 April 1963. British radars and fire-control equipment were installed. Two following ships were dismantled and completed to a such altered and enlarged design.
