Project history: Designed by Gibbs and Cox, New York, as an updated Sea Control Ship, a type proposed for the US Navy in FY75 but not funded by Congress; the 12° ski-jump allowed more effective use of the EAV-8B Matador II (Bravo) aircraft, delivered in 1987-88. Two lifts were right aft and forward of the island, the latter offset to starboard. As in the FFG7 class, two small 800hp electric motors with retractable propeller pods provided emergency 4.5kts 'get home' facility. Fitting-out was delayed by the installation of a flag (lower) bridge and consequent modifications to command and control systems. Fleet flagship.
Modernizations: 1990: - SPS-52C radar; + SPS-52D radar; superstructure was enlarged, DAPS optical landing system was added, a parallel fuel distribution system with 3,700m3 tank capacity was installed to permit carrying a fuel load of 40% aviation fuel and 60% DFM propulsion fuel.
Naval service: No significant events.
