Project history: US Independence class light aircraft carrier, transferred to Spain under MDAP on 30 August 1967 and purchased outright in 1973. The transfer of Thetis Bay (LPH6) was originally contemplated. Extensively refitted and modernized before transfer, with strengthened decks and lifts, new electronic equipment, and funnels 1 and 3 removed. In later years best speed reported as 24 kts. In 1976 she became the first ship carried Harrier VSTOL attackers.
Ship protection: The 127mm belt and 51mm main deck protected machinery and ammunition magazines.
Modernizations: early 1980s: - 1 x 4 - 40/60 (fwd)
Naval service: Returned to US in 1989 for preservation at New Orleans as a museum.
