Project history: Built in France on the means collected by native Spanish, living in Argentina and Uruguay. Sheathed and coppered for overseas service. To the First World War beginning ship has become outdated and was converted to minelayer.

Ship protection: Protection consisted of steel protective deck only.

Modernizations: 1920: armament consisted of 2 x 1 - 140/43 Schneider-Canet, 4 x 1 - 105/32 Krupp M1897, mines

Naval service: Since 1921 Río de La Plata served as seaplane tender at Barcelona.
