Project history: Wooden-hulled barque-rigged vessels with two funnels and a ram bow; heavily and, clumsily built having been designed as ironclads. As completed they were armed wilh 8 203mm 180pdr Armstrong RML guns and were already obsolescent.
Modernizations: 1885, Aragón was armed with: 6 x 1 - 160/25 Hontoria M1879, 2 x 1 - 87/22 Krupp M1876, 4 x 1 - 75/24 Krupp M1883, 2 - 356 TT (beam)
1885, Navarra, Castilla were armed with: 4 x 1 - 149/32 Krupp M1880, 2 x 1 - 120/27 Krupp M1883, 2 x 1 - 87/22 Krupp M1876, 4 x 1 - 75/24 Krupp M1883, 2 - 356 TT (beam)
Naval service: Castilla was sunk 1.5.1898 by US cruisers at the Battle of Manila Bay.
