Project history: Alsonso XII was laid down in August 1881 but delayed for 5 years by shortages of materials. Two-funnelled unprotected cruisers, but built on the cellular system with 12 watertight compartments. The Hontoria main armament was mounted in sponsons, and all the TT were fixed - 2 forward, 1 aft and 1 on each beam.

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: Reina Cristina was sunk by USN ships at the Battle of Manila Bay 1.5.1898. Reina Mercedes was scuttled 4.7.1898 as a blockship at entrance to Santiago de Cuba harbour, later salvaged by Americans and served in the USN as receiving ship.
