Project history: Project definition contract was granted to France in 1989 but only in 1994 contract of building of two ships under "Sawari 2" program was signed. Third unit was ordered in 1997.

Modernizations: 2003, Al Riyadh: - 1 x 1 - 100/55; + 1 x 1 - 76/62 OTO-Melara Compact SR

Naval service: Makkah was badly damaged by grounding on coral reef in Red Sea 3.12.2004, engine room was completely flooded. She returned to service only in 2010.
