Project history: As submarines of VI and a VI-bis series not to the full answered ordered tasks, in 1934 working out of the improved project has begun. Calculations shown, that taking into account safe rail transportation the length can be increased on 20%, breadth on 10%, and displacement on 40%. Taking into account requirements the project approved 29.12.1934 has been developed.
New boats had a single-hulled all-welded construction. The limited dimensions have forced to store a number of lines of the previous classes: single-shaft machinery, armaments structure, TT reloading through forward doors. The diving depth too remained at former level, but surfaced and submerged speeds managed to be raised at the expense of more powerful engines.
Modernizations: 1940-1941, M-49, M-58, M-87, M-88, M-89, M-90, M-91, M-92, M-93, M-94, M-95, M-97; 1941-1942, M-96, M-102: + Mars-8 hydrophone
1942, M-174: + Tamir-4 sonar
1944, M-171 (project 604): + 18 mines (236/288t, 13.5/7.5kts).
Naval service: M-31 was lost between 14 and 25.12.1942 off Zmeiny Island, probably sunk 18.12.1942 by German submarine chaser Xanten, and minesweeping boats R30, FR2, FR7 and FR8, or was lost on a mine. M-33 was lost between 22 and 25.8.1942 on a mine at Odessa. M-34 was lost after 3.11.1941 presumably on a mine at Constanza. M-36 was lost by unknown cause 4.1.1944 during trials at Kobuleti. M-58 was lost after 16.10.1941 possibly on mine at Constanza. M-59 was lost between 26/10 and 3.11.1941, possibly on a mine at Sulina. M-60 between 23 and 26.9.1942 was lost on a mine at Odessa. M-118 was lost between 1 and 7.10.1942 off Sulina.
M-94 was sunk 21.7.1941 by German submarine U140 at island Hiumaa. M-95 was lost between 14 and 18.6.1942 between islands Lavensaari and
Gogland, presumably 15.6.1942 on a mine. M-96 was lost between 7 and 9.9.1944 in Narva
Bay, possibly on a mine. M-97 was lost between 2 and 11.9.1942 on a mine
S of Helsinki. M-98 was lost between 14 and 20.11.1941 in W part of Gulf
of Finland, presumably on a mine. M-99 was sunk 27.6.1941 by German
submarine U149 at island
Hiumaa. M-103 was lost between 24 and 26.8.1941 on a mine at Vormsi island.
M-106 was sunk 5.7.1943 by German submarine chasers UJ1206 and UJ1217 in the Kongs-fjord. M-108 was
lost between 21 and 27.2.1944 presumably on a mine in the Kongs-fjord. M-121 was
lost between 7 and 14.11.1942 presumably on a mine in Varanger Fjord. M-122
was sunk 14.5.1943 by German aircraft at Rybachy peninsula. M-175 was sunk 10.1.1942
by German submarine U584 in Varanger
Fjord. Lost by unknown causes M-172 (between 1 and 11.10.1943), M-173 (between 6 and 14.8.1942), M-174 (between 1 and 11.10.1943) and M-176 (between 21 and 28.6.1942) presumably were lost on mines in Varanger Fjord.
M-49 and M-63 in August, 1941 were lost off Vladivostok, possibly on
Soviet mines.
