Project history: These submarines were
developed since 1930 as small patrol submarines for Baltic, but since 1932 usage
in the Far East became priority, where, thanks to the small dimensions, they
could be transported without dismantling. The design was approved in September,
1932. Single-hulled all-welded (M-1-6 were
riveted), CT and bridge were made from duralumin. On trials bad seaworthiness, a considerable diving time (2min)
and surface speed shortage (11kts instead of designed 13kts) were revealed.
Following 20 boats were built under the improved project VI-bis. Hull form was improved,
CT form was changed, fast diving tank was fitted. It has allowed to raise speed both in surface, and in underwater positions and to moderate a diving time to 80sec, but
diving depth still did not exceed 60m.
Modernizations: 1940-1942, all: + Mars-8 hydrophone
Naval service: M-71 and M-80 on the night of 24.6.1941 were blown up at Libava. M-83 was scuttled in the same place being damaged by German field guns 27.6.1941. M-74 was sunk 24.9.1941 by German aircraft at Kronstadt, in 1942 raised and commissioned again in November. M-78 was sunk 23.6.1941 by German submarine U144 SW of Vindava. M-81 was lost 1.7.1941 on a mine in Muhu-vjajn Strait.
