Project history: This is a redesigned pr. 667BDR to R-29RM missiles (hence the 'RM' suffix) with a new sonar. The spherical array squeezes out the 400mm self-defence tubes, and there is a towed array and a flank array.

Modernizations: 2003, K-84 Yekaterinburg; 2006, K-114 Tula; 2008, K-117 Briansk; 2009, K-18 Kareliya; 2012, K-51 Verkhoturye, K-407 Novomoskovsk: - 16 R-29RM SLBM; + 16 R-29RMU2 Sineva SLBM (16 3M37U2)

2016, BS-64 Podmoskovye: under Project 09787: - all armament, MGK-520.6 Skat-BDRM sonar; + Gneys-09787 sonar suite, bow- and stern thrusters, additional living and technical spaces instead of missile compartments, ability to carry Project 10831 or Project 18551 special purpose mini submarine; length oa became 173.0m, displacement 11600 / 15100t
