Project history: Research special purpose nuclear submarine, designed on the basis of project 949A by Rubin design bureau under the order of Deep-sea Research Administration of the Russian Navy. Submarine will carry rescue midget submarines and deep-sea manned autonomous underwater vehicle designed for diverse research in remote ocean regions, participate in search and rescue operations. Just the submarine will provide placing and maintenance of various underwater equipment and its inspection, participating in the tests of new models of research equipment for monitoring of sea-bottom cables and pipes. Presumably Belgorod will carry deep submerging mini-submarine of project 10831 or 18510M for research and intelligence purposes. Also she will carry four Poseidon nuclear-powered attack submarine drones with nuclear warheads and will have 4 2P39 launchers for unknown missiles.
