Project history: Despite its apparent attack submarine appearance, this submarine was intended primarily as an Granat CruM platform. Steel-hulled Project 971 is far less expensive than the titanium Project 945, so it is being produced as a general-purpose submarine. Submarines are fully automated, have an escape sphere, all machinery is mounted on two-level rafts. Sections of incomplete Kuguar and Rys' and stricken Ak Bars were used for building of Project 955 strategic submarines. Nerpa was completed on Indian funds under Indian order with simplfied armament and leased by India as Chakra.
Modernizations: 2019, K-328 Leopard; planned, K-461 Volk, K-391 Bratsk, K-295 Samara: as project 09717 - MRKP-58 Radian radar, MGK-540 Skat-3 sonar suite; + ability to carry Kalibr-PL CruM (3M14K) / Kalibr-PL SSM (3M54K), R-43-0971 radar, MGK-540M Kizhuch-971M sonar suite
Naval service: No significant events.
