Project history: In effect this was a diesel equivalent to Project 675, carrying half the missiles. Missiles had to be carried in elevating launchers which folded flat on deck, hence consuming considerable length. Project 651 could accommodate only four weapons. The Project 651 sonar suit matches that of an Project 675, with Arktika in the forefoot. There is also a sonar window in the forward part of the sail, which swings aside to expose the submarine's Argument missile guidance radar.

Modernizations: 1960s, K-156, K-85, K-70: silver-zinc batteries were replaced by lead-acid, data was as other boats.

1965-67, K-156, K-85, K-70: - 2 x 2 P-5D SSM; + 2 x 2 P-6 SSM (4 4K88)

1968, 552-515: - MRPTs-2 ECM suite; + K-24 ECM suite

1970, K-81 - under Project 651K: Kasatka-B satellite-supported SSM targeting system was installed

1985, B-68 - under Project 651E: auxiliary nuclear reactor VAU-6 was installed (600kW), submerged range was greatly improved.

Naval service: No significant events.
