Project history: First unit was ordered as technology demonstrator for larger export Amur-1650 design. Sea trials of leading submarine delayed till 2012 and proven unsuccessful. Construction of later units was slowed. Now construction of 2nd and 3rd boats was delayed awaiting for ability of installing new air-independent propulsion system.

Submarines are single-hulled, with sail-mounted bow planes and cruciform stern control surfaces. Said to be 8-10 times quieter than project 877 submarines, as example they have brushless generators to reduce noise.

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: No significant events.
