Project history: This ballistic-missile submarine with Project 641 components was built specifically to fire the new R-13 missile (some boats were equipped for a time with R-11FM carried by converted Project 611. Project 629B was the first submarine to test the submerged-launch missile. Project 629A was the submerged-launch boat with three tubes.
