Project history: This new coastal unit was conceived as a minehunter with substantially reduced signatures (magnetic, electric, acoustic and hydrodynamic). Project 257D was the wooden version; Project 257M was the version built of low-magnetic signature steel. The wooden version was adopted. The designers claimed that, in comparison with Project 265, they had reduced the magnetic signature by a factor of nearly 50, the acoustic signature by a factor of 8-10. and the electric signature by a factor of 5. They also claimed a significant reduction in the hydrodynamic (pressure) signature. The degaussing system included automatic coil control; the UEP signature was reduced by using dielectric coatings and insulation, and special sound damping machinery foundations were used. The low-noise propellers used air bubble shields (like the contemporary US Masker system). Sweep equipment was handled, for the first time, using hydraulics. The single gun was a special non-magnetic version of the AK-230.
Modernizations: 1970s, all pr. 257D and 257DM: - I-2 USV; + IU-2 USV
1970s, BT-314 and some others: + 1 x 4 Strela-3 SAM
Naval service: BT-83 lost the anchor and drifted ashore at Baltiysk 9.1.1982 during a storm. BT-316 22.12.1984 foundered under tow in very difficult ice conditions off Cape Krasny Partizan. BT-251 was lost at Ochamchira 19.8.1989 after explosion of amunition.
