Project history: Successful multi-purpose ships, designed in days of the First World War on the basis of Azov Sea steam schooner Elpidifor. In wartime it was planned to use such ships as landing vessels, minesweepers or minelayers, and to as usual merchantmen in a peace time. Universal character of vessels predetermined a number of special requirements: big capacity, shallow draught of fore end and satisfactory for Black sea seaworthiness.
In 1916 in Nikolaev a series from 20 vessels (Nos410-429) was laid down, but before beginning of Civil war any has not completed. Elpidifors No410-412 in 1919 were completed by Whites and subsequently were withdrawn abroad. After liberation of Nikolaev by Red Army troops Elpidifors Nos413-417 were completed as gunboats. Remaining were completed as tankers and dry cargo vessels, one of them (Valeriy Chkalov, ex-Elpidifor No418) in days of Great Patriotic War served as minesweeper T-512. Ships could take aboard up to 6 light tanks or 9 lorries, or 2000 marines.

Naval service: Elpidifor No415 was lost 9.1.1921 in battle against French destroyer Sakalave at Anapa. Elpidifors No416 and 417 in 1924-1925 were used as minesweepers.

Krasnaya Armeniya 21.9.1941 was sunk by German aircraft at Tendra plait. Krasnaya Gruziya 28.2.1943 was torpedoed by German MTBs S28, S51, S72 and S102 at Myskhako, ran aground and ultimately destroyed by field artillery and aircraft.
Krasnaya Abkhaziya was 28.3.1947 converted to survey vessel. Krasny Adzharistan since 27.9.1945 was used as depot ship and hulk.
